Scholarship Guidelines for In-coming or Current BCTC Students

Henry Tandy ‘Removing Barriers’ Scholarship

Purpose: The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated’s Education Foundation offers scholarships to underserved/marginalized males who plan to attend Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC). Applications are reviewed by the Fraternity’s scholarship committee to recommend scholarship winners for the upcoming or current academic year.

    1. The awarding of the Alpha Beta Lambda Education Foundation Alpha Phi Alpha Henry Tandy Removing Barriers Scholarship should be based on need, with consideration given to merit and the moral character of the candidates. The funds are to be used to assist students in offsetting the cost of educational expenses such as tuition, course supplies and other fees.
    2. The applicant must be an underserved/marginalized male high school student from Fayette, Bourbon, Clark, Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Scott or Woodford County who plan to attend Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC), or a currently enrolled underserved/marginalized male student at BCTC. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or better (as a high school graduate or a current college student).
    3. Documentation in the form of a transcript and current class schedule must be provided to the Alpha Beta Lambda scholarship committee at the time the applicant submits a request. Incoming/first year BCTC students should include a high school transcript. Current college students should include a college transcript from the previous semester and a current class schedule.
    4. The Scholarship can be given to a student who already has another scholarship (academic only).
    5. All applicants must submit an application in order to be considered.
    6. If awarded a scholarship, the applicant must submit a note of thanks prior to receiving the funds (see application form for details).
    7. All applications for the scholarship will be considered on a case by case basis and can be submitted at any time. Applicants should keep in mind that the scholarship committee meets periodically. Therefore, if funds are needed by a specific deadline, the applicant should plan accordingly to submit the request as early as possible.
    8. The Alpha Beta Lambda Education Foundation Henry Tandy Removing Barriers Scholarship is a one-time scholarship (non-renewable), not to exceed $500.
    9. Once the Scholarship Committee has determined that the student has satisfied the specified requirements, payment will be made payable to BCTC on behalf of the student. In some cases, students can also be paid as a reimbursement, but must provide detailed documentation (in the form of invoices, itemized receipts, etc.) to receive the final payment.
